Zielona Góra is the largest city in the area--about 100,000 people. I was getting a bit of cabin fever in this samll town by Tuesday, so I found the bus schedule into the city and rounded up about 8 of the Americans to go with me. We took the local bus, which cost $2.40 USD each way and took about 15 minutes. It was really simple and my Polish was good enough to get us there and back on the right bus.
This picture is of a church right in the middle of town. We went in and I think they were in the middle of mass. Across the street we saw a monument to Solidarity, the labor union led by Lach Walensa that help bring down Communism.
Sarah and the other TAs found a water fountain in the main square. You can see in the pictures that the local kids use is as a swimming pool.
Across the street from the bus station was a small grocery store that seemed remarkably similar to a store in the states--much more than the shop in our little village.
Although, last night I got some bug repellent from our little shop and it helped a lot last night. We've been getting bitten badly by mosquitos. Sarah got a bad bite on her right eylid. The doctor her put noemycin on it last night and it's better today. Everyone has been taking great care of Sarah. They all love her so much, she may not want to go home.
Last night at 10:30 pm we had a reception for an introduction get together between the American staff and the Polish staff. They all loved that Sarah and I have a relative from Poznan: "So, you are from Poznan. You are Polish...yes?" During the introductions, Sarah said that this experience is making her more confident for high school and living away from home. That is exactly what I hoped would happen. That, and finding a nice Polish boy to marry some day. (...just kidding...see next message)
